After an early morning exploring the ancient ruins of Cobá—so early we had the jungle to ourselves—it was finally time to chill. We'd biked, climbed pyramids, crossed paths with a deadly coral snake, and spent the morning feeling like 19th-century explorers discovering a lost city. Back at the pool, a black bird landed beside the brilliant blue water, and the simple contrast of color caught my eye. Was it guarding the pool? Or had it simply come to enjoy a quiet moment, just like we had? Later, while building the pattern, I discovered my favorite illusion: everyone looks for the bird in the blue, when it's actually hiding in the dark negative space between the watery shapes. Sometimes the most interesting discoveries aren't in what you're looking at—but in what you're overlooking.
