Gridsmith Studio transforms original photography of found natural objects—feathers, bones, shells, and insects—into refined, repeatable surface patterns. At first glance, each design feels abstract and graphic. Look closer, and something unexpected emerges. The result is work that captures attention, rewards curiosity, and brings a deeper story to the surface.
"You make the weird beautiful." That's my favorite thing anyone has ever said about my work. That, and: "You find beauty where others don't even know to look."
I've been hearing some version of this for years, and it still gets me every time. Because that's exactly what I'm trying to do.

Every pattern begins with paying attention. Some discoveries come home with me. Others remain exactly where I found them, captured only through my camera.

Each object is photographed with care — isolating texture, edge, and shadow. The camera finds what the eye skims past. This is where the raw material becomes something to work with.

The image is flipped, mirrored, and repeated until a pattern emerges. What starts as a single feather becomes a kaleidoscope. The original is still in there — waiting to be found.

The pattern finds its next life on a product. From apparel and wallpaper to home decor, Gridsmith designs are created to move beyond the studio through licensing and collaboration.
Not everything starts with a plan. The studio is where photographs, found objects, experiments and rabbit holes collide, and where an idea gets the space to become something unexpected.
