My dear neighbor called one day to tell me that a crow had died in her backyard. She wasn’t quite sure who to call, so she called me. I came down with my camera and photographed it where it lay. She then said a beautiful prayer and sendoff, and we buried the crow at the back of her property near the bank. When I looked at the photographs later, what struck me most were the wings—the layers of feathers and the unexpected, shimmery blues hidden in all that black. I removed the background and began playing with those beautiful shapes and they became this pattern.
