I was hiking in Chile's high Atacama Desert while chasing a total solar eclipse when this bone caught my eye. There were bones scattered all along the trail, but this one insisted on being picked up. I held it up against the impossibly blue sky. At nearly 16,000 feet, the air was so clear the colors hardly seemed real. Before I ever uploaded the photograph, I could already see the pattern waiting inside it.
